This week during class we discussed how to be an effective literacy teacher. There are many aspects that an effective literacy teacher should express. The teacher should understand how children learn, which is not only important in literacy but in all subject areas. If a teacher doesn’t know how their students learn the student will never be able to grow as an individual. A literacy teacher should understand listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I feel that now that I am in college there is more of an effort to focus on speaking but I do not recall my elementary teachers ever emphasizing how clearly I spoke. I wish that I could go back to elementary school and learn how to speak clearly and annunciate my words. I always catch myself mumbling and wish that I grew up learning how to speak well and correctly. An effective literacy teacher must understand listening as well. I never was taught how to listen and wish I had a brief lesson on how to listen. I find myself always drifting off or getting distracted by other things. From this week alone I realized that there are many minor details that I am going to need to learn to become a better teacher then my teachers were for me.
I agree. I like how you said that you want to become a better teacher then what you had in elmentary school. You want to address issues that were not focused on when you were in school. Your students will learn so much more and it will really beneifit them in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the teachers getting to know the students. I feel that you are right when you said that if the teacher does not know the students they cannot grow. Hopefully by the time this class is over, we will learn how to be great literacy teachers and know how to teach and improve our students reading, writing, and speaking skills.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because I am the same way, believe it or not. Even though it have be quite a few years since elementary school for us, I still think that if the teachers engaged us enough we would never forget an activity we did. I just think it is absolutely necessary for teachers to get to know their students right off the bat. We need to know that they like, where they come from how they learn best. Without any of that how could we ever even begin to be good effective teachers? This applies to all areas of learning and subjects not just reading. We need to teach even the youngest of students, how to listen, how to speak, how to write clearly. Because I know I wish teachers would have taken more time with me and my penmanship!
